The country with the highest strawberry harvest per capita?
(Photo: Al Bello, AFP/Getty Images)The world’s most populous country has produced more strawberries per capita than any other country, according to a new report.
The Globe and Mail analyzed the yields of Canada’s strawberry farming operations, and found that the country produces roughly as many strawberries per acre as the United States.
While the U.S. produces roughly 6.2 million acres of strawberries annually, Canada produces nearly 6.5 million acres, the paper reports.
That makes the United Kingdom the world’s largest strawberry producer.
Canada produces roughly the same number of strawberries per hectare of land as Mexico, the Globe notes.
The United States, on the other hand, is responsible for about half of the world production of strawberries, while Mexico is responsible the other half, the report found.
The report also looked at the production of some of the top fruits and vegetables in Canada.
The Globe and Times’ study was based on data from Canada’s Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
The Agriculture and Food Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
